SHOWS FOR YOUNGSTERS AND THEIR PARENTS TOO : ‘It Just Takes One’ on USA; ‘Reading Rainbow’ begins new episodes; Disney’s ‘Pocahontas’ makes debut

Disney Channel launches its participation in the cable industry’s “Tune In to Kids and Family Week” with the premiere of its 1995 box-office hit Pocahontas (Sunday at 7 p.m.). The animated film combined historical fact with popular folklore and legend. The voice cast includes Mel Gibson as Smith and Native American actress Irene Bedard in the title role. The soundtrack won Oscars for best score and best song (“Colors of the Wind” sung by Vanessa Williams). For the family.

My Life As a Dog, a coming-of-age series based on the 1985 acclaimed Swedish film of the same name, premieres on Showtime (Sunday at 8 p.m.), with Michael Yarmush as 11-year-old Eric Johansson. After his mother’s death and his abandonment by his father, Eric is sent to live with relatives in a little fishing town and must find his way in life. For ages eight to 14.

Hosted by journalist Linda Ellerbee, “The American Family and Television: A National Town Hall Meeting” (Monday at 7:30 p.m.). brings together viewers, producers, advertisers and others to discuss ways to improve cable television. Eight channels will broadcast the meeting simultaneously: Disney, Cartoon Network, USA Network, Nickelodeon, Bravo, Family Channel, TV Land and Sportschannel Chicago. For ages 10 and older.

Reading Rainbow (KCET, weekdays at 1 p.m.) begins its spring season with five new episodes, with LeVar Burton continuing as host. Monday’s episode, “On the Day You Were Born,” explores the wonder and beauty of birth. On Tuesday, “Hip Cat” looks at jazz with saxophonist Joshua Redman. For ages 7 to 10.
