Prisoner, Jailer Injured in Crash

A Cypress city jailer, transporting a prisoner to the Orange County Jail early Sunday, rammed into a car left abandoned in the middle of the freeway, injuring himself and the prisoner.

Police would not identify either person, but said they did not suffer serious injuries.

The prisoner, a 35-year-old Cypress resident, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he was treated for head injuries and kept under 24-hour observation, said Cypress Police Sgt. Gene Komrosky.

The jailer was taken to an unidentified nearby hospital, where he was treated for cuts and bruises and released, Komrosky said.

The accident occurred at 4:55 a.m. on the eastbound Garden Grove Freeway near the Euclid Street exit, Komrosky said. The jailer was driving a marked police car when it rear-ended an abandoned car that apparently had been involved in another accident, he said.

“It was just left in the middle of the roadway,” according to Komrosky.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
