School District Trustees to Consider $3.2 Million in Cuts
Trustees of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District will start tonight’s meeting an hour early so they can confer with the citizens advisory committee about proposed budget cuts.
The committee has the responsibility of making recommendations to the board about cutting $3.2 million from its annual budget. Committee members said they wanted to make sure the students’ education does not suffer from cuts to pay for a 7% raise for teachers.
The committee has recommended that the board cut its $36,000 annual contribution to the Environmental Nature Center in half. They also urged the board to cut some administrative jobs.
The board will also discuss whether to hold weekly meetings. Board President Martha Fluor explained that it has been difficult to get all matters accomplished in two meetings a month.
