Davis Elementary’s Designation Mulled

Despite pleas from some parents for more emphasis on the basics of learning, the school board tonight will consider dropping the designation “fundamental” for one elementary campus.

In December, trustees of Santa Ana Unified School District voted to use a back-to-basics curriculum at Wallace R. Davis Elementary.

The Davis site on French Street was formerly the school district’s headquarters. It is being remodeled as classroom space and is expected to open by the fall.

A parent survey last year found that 71% of respondents would consider enrolling their children in a fundamental school. The district has designated seven such schools, including Davis, and those already operating with back-to-basics programs have long waiting lists.

The move to strike Davis comes after a board meeting two weeks ago when about 20 parents from the neighborhood requested the change.

The area surrounding the school is predominantly Latino, and speakers said that the children need the bilingual education that fundamental schools typically do not offer.

Also tonight, the board will consider a request from parents for bilingual instruction at Davis.

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. at district headquarters, 1601 E. Chestnut Ave. Information: (714) 558-5555.
