‘Old Sparky’ Is Cleared in Botched Execution

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —
Dry sponges improperly applied to the headpiece of a prisoner in Florida’s electric chair, nicknamed “Old Sparky,” were the reason flames shot from his mask during an execution last month, consultants said Friday.
“I’m confident the electric chair is working properly and is not a roadblock to carrying out the law,” Gov. Lawton Chiles said.
