Galaxy update--Midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos returns from World Cup duty for El Salvador. Harut Karapetyan, who had a goal and an assist in last week’s 3-2 loss to the Wizards in Kansas City, will start at forward. Forward Bryan Taylor is suspended for one game after getting a red card against the Wizards. Goalkeeper Jorge Campos is still in Mexico and will miss his third game. Defender Paul Caligiuri remains on the inactive list while the Galaxy “evaluates its alternatives.” He could be activated or cut. If he is added to the active roster, someone else must be released. Striker Eduardo Hurtado, the team’s leading scorer last season with 21 goals, has been held scoreless in the first two games, including the shootout loss to D.C United at the Rose Bowl. Defender Robin Fraser limped off the field at Arrowhead Stadium after the Wizards won, but he is fit for tonight’s game. The Galaxy swept San Jose in the 1996 regular season, then edged the Clash, two games to one, in their best-of-three, first-round playoff series.

Clash update--Coach Laurie Calloway, fined this week for berating a referee, has strengthened his team by signing midfielder Istvan Urbanyi of Hungary. Urbanyi arrived from Europe on Friday and is eligible to play tonight. To make room for him, the Clash waived Paul Holocher. The Clash also signed Mexico national team striker Daniel Guzman from Puebla in the Mexican first division. Guzman, like Campos, will not be available until May, when the Mexican season ends. Eric Wynalda has scored three goals in San Jose’s first three games but required seven stitches above his right eye to close a gash suffered in a 2-1 loss to the Burn in Dallas. John Doyle, the MLS defender of the year in ‘96, will have the task of marking “El Tanque” Hurtado.
