LATINO ACTORS

Share

I am Chicano and have been a working actor for 16 years. Never in that time has the employment of Latinos in the film and television industry even come close to reflecting the Latino population in the U.S., as was stated in Tim Truby’s March 30 letter.

The percentage of jobs that Latino actors have worked on has held at an average of 2% during the last 20 years. The 1990 U.S. Census listed Latino population at approximately 11%. That is underrepresentation, pure and simple.

In the mid-’70s, the late Eddie Foy Jr. volunteered his time to Nosotros, a group of Latino acting students, the majority with little or no experience.

He coached and helped train us, and went so far as to invite agents and casting directors to watch our skits. He also promoted some actors who are now active in the film industry and cast some of us in entry roles.

Eddie Foy was opening the door for many Latino actors and actresses who would otherwise never have the chance. Belatedly, I want to say, “Thank you, Eddie!”
