CSUN Election

Re “CSUN Elections Attract Few Voters,” April 9.

I voted April 8 for David Phelps in the Associated Students Inc. elections. It was the second year I voted, and I voted against Vladimir Cerna, again.

I really believe that part of the reason students didn’t vote this year is that they feel their concerns fall on deaf ears. After Cerna cast the deciding vote to bring David Duke to CSUN, the CSUN paper was flooded with letters and student opinions saying we didn’t want Duke. Duke came, and look at what happened. Our campus isn’t known as having a successful Business Department or for the sports teams; it’s “the place David Duke came and there was a riot.” Another reason voter turnout was so low is that our campus lacks community. We are probably the largest dysfunctional family in the state. Students would rather run you down trying to get to a parking space and race to class than stop for a minute and say hello. We’re too busy dodging bulldozers and running nearly a mile from one corner of campus to the other.

The issues get lost in the hostility people feel toward our current president. Rather than take their opportunity and change that, they’re fed up and they give up. It frustrates me that students are so ungrateful for the chance to shape their education and the future of their university. In any other country, I doubt they’d be so fortunate.
