* DEFENSE: Phoenix’s defense is keyed by goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, one of the league’s streakiest. Tverdovsky, traded by the Ducks in the Selanne deal, is among top NHL’s top scoring defensemen. The Ducks gave up two goals or fewer in 14 of their final 23 games.
* GOALTENDING: Khabibulin started the final 42 regular-season games and appeared in 72 of 82 for the Coyotes. The Ducks’ Hebert started 42 of 43 during one stretch and appeared in 67 of 82 overall. Both are superb when they are on top of their game.
* COACHING: Both Don Hay of Phoenix and Ron Wilson of the Ducks are making their head coaching playoff debuts. Hay is in his first season with the Coyotes. Wilson guided Team USA to the World Cup title in September and is the front-runner for the 1998 U.S. Olympic team job.
