Waves Split Pair With St. Mary’s

Pepperdine split a West Coast Conference baseball doubleheader with St. Mary’s on Saturday, winning the opener, 4-0, and losing the second game, 3-2, at St. Mary’s.

Steve Schenewerk (7-1) pitched a three-hitter in the opener, which was seven innings. Schenewerk faced 24 batters, three over the minimum.

Mark Lopez hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his fifth homer of the season.

In the second game, Lopez was three for four, including two doubles, but the rest of the Waves (26-17, 13-2 in conference play) managed only four hits against pitchers Jason Morgan-Voyce and Christopher Bye.

Bye (3-1) picked up the victory despite allowing a game-tying run in the top of the ninth.

Tom Nichols singled home Mike Waugh with two out in the ninth to lift St. Mary’s (14-22, 5-6).

John Workman (3-5) took the loss for the Waves.

In other baseball games:

Cal Lutheran 22-17, Caltech 4-1--David Cruz had five hits, six runs batted in and seven runs for the Kingsmen (25-7, 14-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Caltech.

Tom McGee added three hits and four RBIs on the day for Cal Lutheran.

Ventura 6, Santa Barbara 5--Andy Super hit an inside-the-park home run to center field with two out in the 10th inning to lift the Pirates (19-12, 8-9) in a Western State Conference game at Ventura.

The Pirates scored twice with two out in the ninth to tie the score, 5-5. Jeremy Pierce stole third and scored on an errant throw to make the score 5-4, and Chris Cicuto walked with the bases loaded to drive in Burke Braun. Pierce hit his 10th home run.

Mission 9, Pierce 3--Jaime Cerna was three for five, including his sixth home run, and drove in four runs for the Free Spirit (16-19, 7-10) in a WSC game at Mission.

Jose Sandoval was three for four and scored four runs.

Canyons 12, Valley 8--In his first start of the season, David Soto allowed two runs on five hits in five innings for the Cougars (24-11, 11-6) of a WSC game at Canyons.

Soto had three hits and two RBIs. Louis Sanchez and Robby Rehfeld each had two hits and two RBIs for Canyons, which had eight batters hit by a pitch.

Hancock 8, Moorpark 4--Ed Castellanos was two for four, including a solo home run, for the Raiders (11-22, 6-11) in a WSC game at Moorpark.

Cuesta 7, Oxnard 1--Right-hander Marco Hanlon pitched a four-hitter for Cuesta (14-3 in conference play) in a WSC game at Oxnard.

SOFTBALL

Bakersfield 3, Moorpark 1--Colleen McDonald had two hits and Danielle Stines had a sacrifice fly for Moopark (18-17, 8-4) in a WSC game at first-place Bakersfield (23-11, 9-1).

Valley 6, Canyons 5--Kim Scott reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rosie Gonzalez in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Monarchs (17-15, 7-4) in a WSC game at Valley.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

BYU d. Pepperdine, 12-15, 15-11, 15-11, 12-15, 15-13--Ryan Millar, from Highland High, had 34 blocks for the Cougars (19-5, 14-5) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Provo, Utah. George Roumain had 39 kills for the Waves (18-8, 13-6).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7, Cal Lutheran 2--The No. 3 doubles team of Kaarin Benson and Heather Szabo was one of the few bright spots for the Regals (9-8, 2-5), winning its match, 6-4, 6-1, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (13-4, 6-0).
