Ojai Festival to Offer 5 Concerts at Libbey Bowl

The 1997 Ojai Festival, under music director Emanuel Ax, will offer five concerts during the weekend of June 6-8. Principal conductor is Daniel Harding, who will lead members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Philharmonic’s New Music Group. The programs, all to be given in Libbey Bowl in downtown Ojai:

* June 6 at 8:15 p.m.: Cho-Liang Lin, violin; David Finckel, cello; Emanuel Ax, piano. Copland: Piano Variations. Harbison: “November 19, 1828.” Debussy: Violin Sonata. Schubert: Trio in E-flat, Opus 100.

* June 7 at 4 p.m.: L.A. Philharmonic New Music Group, Daniel Harding, conductor; Richard Stoltzman, clarinet; Elissa Johnston, soprano. Ravel: Three Poems of Stephane Mallarme. John Adams: “Gnarly Buttons.” Schoenberg: Six Pieces, Opus 19. Webern: Concerto, Opus 24. Mozart: “A Musical Joke.”

* June 7 at 8:30 p.m.: Ax and Yoko Nozaki, pianos; percussionists TBA. Debussy: “Pagodes.” Saariaho: “Six Japanese Gardens.” Messiaen: two movements from “Visions de l’Amen.” Bartok: Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.

* June 8 at 11 a.m.: Richard Stoltzman, clarinet; Ax and Peter Soltaman, pianos. Schumann: Fantasy Pieces. Schubert: “Arpeggione” Sonata. Reich: “New York Counterpoint.” Jazz Set.

* June 8 at 5:30 p.m.: Members of L.A. Philharmonic; Harding, conductor; Ax, piano; Lin, violin. Schnittke: “Moz-Art a la Haydn.” Mozart: Piano Concerto in E-flat, K. 449. Schubert: Polonaise in B-flat, D. 580, and “Konzertstuck,” D. 345. Rameau: Suite from “Les Boreades.”
