Westchester resident Bill Goss was recently honored for his 51 years of work as a Red Cross blood services volunteer.

Goss, who just turned 81, began working with the Red Cross during World War II, when he helped form a donor group program in the Los Angeles Fire Department that grew into a larger program still functioning today. He volunteered at blood drives and went on to serve as volunteer coordinator in Southern California and chairman of the governing council.

Goss still volunteers once or twice a month at mobile blood drives.

“I think we as firemen are particularly aware of the need,” said Goss, who was deputy fire chief from 1956 to 1970.

Goss was honored with the Alice Schwartz Award, one of the top honors given by the Southern California region.

“I was sort of surprised,” he said. “It’s been a really happy experience. It kind of--forgive the pun--gets in your blood.”
