Going Postal: As Tuesday night’s deadline to file state and federal taxes approached, a lot of Valley taxpayers tried to put off the inevitable (B5). . . . About 500,000 returns were filed Tuesday, many at post offices that stayed open late. . . . “The Valley is full of procrastinators,” said postal spokeswoman Terri Bouffiou.

Mailbox Mania: Ornate mailboxes are in short supply. A rash of thefts of the fancy boxes in upscale Valley neighborhoods has sent retailers scurrying to meet the demand for replacements. Marlene Steinberg, owner of Tulanians Fireplace and Barbecue in Sherman Oaks, said she has upped the price of the $150 boxes by $10 to get the manufacturer to speed delivery. . . . “We can’t get them quick enough,” Steinberg said.

Rough Edges: Ronni Wilde and Bill Lovelace, top, crash-land in the ocean kayak stage of an “adventure race” at Sycamore Cove last weekend. Their four-person Valley team paddled, hiked, climbed and biked for 33 hours straight. . . . Said Wilde: “I have some chafing in some rather strange places.” A full report in Sports (C8).

Pug’s Pals: Carrying their own panting pugs, actors Mickey Rourke and Carole Kane joined a dozen other people Tuesday in decrying the suspected skinning last week of an Encino pug named Pal. The group urged the Los Angeles City Council to add $5,000 to a growing reward fund, but action was delayed pending a committee recommendation (B5). . . . Tips are being gathered by the SPCA at (800) 540-SPCA.
