A woman who told police that she was raped in an underground parking garage at Crystal Court shopping center but apparently made up the story to hide an extramarital affair was charged Thursday with filing a false police report, authorities said.

Lana Rana Kling, 22, of Mission Viejo alleged that a man wearing dark sunglasses forced her into her car and raped her on the night of Jan. 27. She was not specific on what stores she had visited during her three-hour stay at the mall, police said.

Kling told investigators she sat in her car from the time of the rape until she went home an hour and a half later, police said. However, no security guards at the mall recall seeing her, and no merchants remembered her shopping that day, police said.

Investigating an anonymous tip, police later determined that Kling was never at Crystal Court but had been at a co-worker’s apartment in Santa Ana. Police allege that Kling made up the story to explain her absence to her husband.

Kling faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor.
