Sore Back Leaves Rucchin Questionable for Game 2

Share

Center Steve Rucchin had a precautionary bone scan on his sore back Thursday and is questionable for Game 2 of the Mighty Ducks’ first-round Stanley Cup playoff series tonight against Phoenix.

Rucchin, the Ducks’ third-leading scorer in the regular season, suffered back spasms at the end of Monday’s practice and did not play Wednesday in Game 1.

“Game 2 is possible, but I’m hoping for Game 3,” Coach Ron Wilson said. “If he’s ready, he’s in. If not, we’ll go with our other plans.”

Jari Kurri, playing his 186th Stanley Cup playoff game, filled in capably for Rucchin on the top line in Game 1. Kurri’s assist on the first of Paul Kariya’s two goals was his 231st postseason point.

His five Stanley Cup titles with Edmonton notwithstanding, Kurri said he was still nervous.

“No matter how many games you’ve played, you’re still a little nervous,” said Kurri, the third-leading scorer in playoff history. “You’re nervous in a good way--not so nervous that you can’t handle the puck.”

Until Thursday, enforcer Shawn Antoski felt more like the winner of one of those fantasy giveaways than a real member of the Ducks.

“You know, ‘Win a trip with the Ducks. Travel with the Ducks. Eat lunch with the Ducks. Watch the Ducks play,’ ” said Antoski, activated after spending 2 1/2 months on injured reserve because of a hernia injury. “It was definitely depressing.”

Antoski played in only two games after he was acquired from Pittsburgh in November. He underwent surgery Feb. 4.
