UC Irvine will host a free open house for the public today.

The event “Celebrate UCI ‘97” will feature games, rides, food, live music and campus tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

UCI holds the open house each year so residents can familiarize themselves with the campus and the many courses and events it offers.

Daylong activities kick off with the sixth annual 5K Zot Trot at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Tiny Tot 1K for children under 12 at 8:30 a.m. Registration for the race is $22 for adults and $14 for children. Proceeds will benefit UCI Alumni Assn.’s Endowed Scholarship and Fellowship Fund and student athletes.

Guided tours of the campus’ Main Library, Science Library, chemistry and physical sciences laboratory, student housing and the nearby San Joaquin Freshwater Marsh will be held throughout the day.

Booths also will be set up to provide information about the university to prospective students. UCI staff will be available to answer questions about admission, financial aid and academic programs. Admission and parking is free.
