Kathy Greenwood, a third-grade teacher at Marjorie Veeh Elementary School, has been selected as the city school district’s Teacher of the Year for 1997-98.

Greenwood has been an elementary school teacher for six years. She began as a teacher in the district in the early 1970s, left to raise a family and returned to full-time teaching four years ago.

Among her accomplishments, Greenwood has served as a mentor teacher and representative on several advisory councils and task forces. She is also a California Reading and Literature Project Fellow and participant in the UC Irvine Writing Project.

Greenwood said her personal teaching philosophy is to “create an atmosphere where my students will develop a curiosity about the world, a passion for reading and a love for learning.”

Greenwood was selected from 18 candidates and three finalists, district officials said.

The honor will earn her consideration for the Orange County Department of Education Teacher of the Year awards in the fall.
