FBI Accused of Missing Tips on Ames

A Justice Department report accuses the FBI of failing to aggressively pursue a 1985 spy case that might have unmasked CIA turncoat Aldrich H. Ames earlier. FBI officials said the critics were using “20-20 hindsight.” The still-secret report by the Justice Department’s inspector general says the FBI did not investigate intensively enough when two Washington-based Soviet officials spying for the FBI were executed, according to federal law enforcement officials.
