‘Independence Day’ Wins Kids’ Poll on Nickelodeon

Special effects and humor reigned supreme with kids Saturday when “Independence Day” was named favorite movie and Jim Carrey was dubbed favorite movie actor during Nickelodeon cable channel’s 10th annual Kids’ Choice Awards at Los Angeles’ Grand Olympic Auditorium.
Talk show host Rosie O’Donnell, who hosted the show, was named favorite movie actress (for Nickelodeon’s feature film “Harriet the Spy”).
Among the night’s other winners: “Rugrats” (favorite cartoon), “Home Improvement” (TV show), Tim Allen (TV actor), sisters Tia and Tamera Mowry (co-winners, TV actress), Coolio (singer), “101 Dalmatians’ ” Pongo (animal star) and Kristi Yamaguchi and Shaquille O’Neal (athletes).
Collecting double honors were the Fugees, which won trophies for best musical group and favorite song (“Killing Me Softly”).
In addition, actor Will Smith (“Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Independence Day”) was inducted into the Kids’ Choice Hall of Fame.
