Billiter, 62, an avid runner, died Saturday while driving on the Costa Mesa Freeway after completing the annual UC Irvine Zot Trot five-kilometer race.

Billiter had a history of heart problems but his wife, Maureen, said the cause of death remains unclear.

Autopsy results are pending, she said.

Billiter joined The Times in 1978 as a reporter and later became city editor of the Orange County edition, before deciding to go back to reporting.

He retired in 1994 but continued to work as a Times community correspondent.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Heart Assn.
