High School Report Cards

Share

The Times today is publishing selected “quality indicators” for Los Angeles County high schools, released annually by the California Department of Education. The data come from a variety of sources, including the schools themselves. The information is compiled by the state on every high school to help parents, educators and policymakers spot trends in performance.

The four-year completion rate and the college attendance information is from the 1994-95 school year and is the latest such data available. The SAT/ACT information and the percentage of students enrolled in career or vocational courses is from the 1995-96 school year.

Included here are figures showing the increase or decrease over two years in each category. Also listed is a percentile rank comparing each school to others in the state. Then there is a comparison group rank, showing how each school ranks in a group of 80 in the state that are most similar to it in terms of the socioeconomic and language background of students.

KEYS TO THE TABLES

To find your school:

School districts in the tables are listed alphabetically and marked by this symbol: *

Find your district first. Your individual school is listed alphabetically under the district.

Here are explanations of the quality indicator categories, found under the name of each district or school.

* Four-year completion rate is an estimate of the percentage of the current 9th-grade class that will stay in school through the 12th grade. It is based on the combined dropout rate for all four high school grades during the 1994-95 school year.

* Career-vocational is the percentage of students who took at least one career or vocational course, such as bookkeeping or auto shop, during the 1995-96 school year.

* UC, CSU and Community College show the percentage of 1994-95 graduates who enrolled in the University of California, the California State University or one of the state’s community colleges.

* SAT/ACT above average is the percentage of seniors who scored above the national average on the SAT or the ACT, which colleges use when making admissions decisions. For example, if the rate is 50, it would mean that half of the senior class took one of the tests and scored above the national average. The national average for the SAT, which measures verbal and mathematics reasoning, is 1,000. The average for the ACT, which is a measure of English, math, social studies and science, is 21.

Four measures or rankings (labeled at the top of each numerical column) are provided in each indicator category.

* In the first numerical column: Rate, the percentage of students who have met the criteria defined in each of the indicator categories.

* In the second numerical column: The 2-year growth reports how the latest performance compares to two years earlier. For career-vocational, for example, the growth would be from the 1993-94 school year to the 1995-96 school year.

* In the third numerical column: The CA rank is a percentile rank of how each school compares to all others in the state. A rank of 50, for example, would mean that a school is better than half of the schools in the state.

* In the fourth numerical column: The CG rank is a percentile rank of how each school stands among 80 schools most like it in terms of student background and enrollment.

NOTES

* n/a means the rate was not calculated.

* -- means insufficient data.

* Percentages are rounded off to the nearest tenth.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Other statistics available include information about student background, enrollment, SAT scores and the rate at which students completed the courses needed to qualify for the University of California or the California State University systems.
