No Decision Yet on School Superintendent

The Los Angeles Board of Education on Thursday concluded its second day of deliberations on selection of a new superintendent without reaching a decision.

They will resume their talks Monday, but school board members said they did not expect the discussions to conclude until at least the end of next week, even though a majority of them continue to lean toward Ruben Zacarias, a deputy superintendent in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Several said the other two candidates--Daniel Domenech, a regional superintendent on New York’s Long Island, and former banker William E. B. Siart--each have strengths and weaknesses that need to be analyzed.

“It’s getting very wearing, but we’re moving along,” said board member Julie Korenstein. “We’re really delving into all the candidates. . . . You need to get past just public appearances and what they want you to see.”

The board is seeking a replacement for Supt. Sid Thompson, who will retire at the end of June.
