Recent viewings of Comet Hale-Bopp were such a big hit at Orange Coast College that astronomy instructors will offer 10 to 20 public viewings of stars, planets and other objects in the near future.

Four Hale-Bopp events in recent months drew 2,500 visitors to the campus, officials said.

“This turned out to be an unbelievable success,” said Nicholas Contopoulos, an astronomy instructor.

Upcoming events will include free access to telescopes and assistance with spotting celestial wonders.

Students will be trained to assist attendees and could receive some financial compensation for their efforts. Viewings are expected to start by early next year.
