Council Divvies Up Block Grant Money

Share

The City Council voted to spend $2 million in federal Community Development Block Grant money on social service programs and community enhancements.

Allocations ranged from $24,000 for security lighting in the Oakview and Amberleaf neighborhoods, to $180,000 to expand the Oakview library branch, to $6,000 for the Orange County Council on Aging. A motion to restore $13,000 for the Boys and Girls Club passed 4-3, with Mayor Ralph H. Bauer and council members Shirley S. Dettloff and Tom Harman opposing it.

Before the vote, Councilman Dave Garofalo questioned the amount of money targeted for the depressed Oakview neighborhood, as well as the money going to programs that would also benefit residents in cities outside Huntington Beach.

Other council members acknowledged Garofalo raised important questions, but said it was too late to make broad changes this year.
