Four Orange County high school seniors were named winners in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.
About 575 other seniors from across the nation also won scholarships in the annual competition, which was started in 1964 to recognize the achievements of African American students.
The four Orange County seniors were chosen from more than 1,200 finalists. They were selected for their high academic standards, high test scores, extracurricular activities, personal interests and goals, program officials said.
The students are: Leonard W. Johnson Jr. of Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton; Eugene L. Mahmoud of University High School in Irvine; Julian R. Dimery of La Habra, who attends Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass.; and Sidney K. Wilberforce of Laguna Hills High School.
They will receive scholarships that range from renewable awards of $500 to more than $2,000 or a single payment between $2,000 and $5,000.
The program is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. All scholarships are supported by corporations, company foundations, professional associations and by the program’s own private funds.
