2 Officials Opposing Islamic Trend Resign

Two Cabinet ministers from the ruling coalition’s junior party resigned in a bid to pressure Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan to drop efforts to promote Islam in the nation. Industry & Commerce Minister Yalim Erez and Health Minister Yildirim Aktuna--from the more Western-oriented True Path Party--resigned to protest their party’s cooperation with the Islam-oriented Welfare Party. They sought to compel their party leader, former Prime Minister Tansu Ciller, to dissolve the coalition partnership with Erbakan.
