Blue Angels Visit Toddler Injured at El Toro Air Show
MISSION VIEJO — The Santa Ana toddler who fractured her skull in a fall from the grandstand at the El Toro Air Show was listed in serious but stable condition Monday and received a good-cheer visit from the Navy’s Blue Angels.
The 17-month-old girl underwent surgery Sunday evening to stop bleeding in her brain after she slipped through the slats of bleachers earlier in the day, said Andrea Pronk, spokeswoman for Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
“She’s in serious but stable condition, and she’s responding appropriately, opening her eyes, verbalizing and responding,” Pronk said of the girl, whose name has not been released. “Her prognosis is good.”
Witnesses estimated that the girl fell 15 feet from the bleachers, where her family was watching the final day of the 47th annual El Toro Air Show.
A Marine search and rescue team rushed the child by helicopter to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, where they made an impromptu landing on a city street, officials said.
On Monday, two pilots from the Blue Angels precision flying team dropped by Children’s Hospital at Mission, the CHOC wing at Mission Hospital, to check on the injured girl and visit with other young patients in the intensive-care ward, Pronk said.
