Commission Approves New Cargo Terminal for Port

Share

Steadfast in their belief that the financial benefits of a new cargo terminal are worth the potential environmental costs, members of the Long Beach Harbor Commission voted Monday to approve the project.

Port officials had expected construction of a 145-acre terminal on the site of the city’s shuttered Naval Station to be well underway by now. But the project has suffered a series of blows in court, where preservationists, environmental groups and the cities of Compton and Vernon have tried to block construction. Lawyers for the port are expected back in court by May 13 to seek permission to proceed.

Officials estimate the terminal would yield at least $14.5 million a year in lease payments to the port and $1 million a year for city coffers.
