Venice High Wins Science Bowl

The whiz kids at Venice High School have won it again.

For the second year in a row, a team from Venice High defeated gifted students from across the country in the National Science Bowl, marking the first time one region has produced three consecutive winners in the bowl’s seven-year history. Van Nuys High School won the title in 1995.

The competition--which focused on math, technology and science knowledge--was tough and the victory hard-won, said Walter Zeisel, supervisor of educational services for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, which sponsored the team.

Venice lost an early double-elimination round against Arcadia High School, making victory twice as difficult to achieve.

“I’m so overwhelmed because they did it the hardest possible way,” Zeisel said.
