TONIGHT’S GAME

DODGERS’ PEDRO ASTACIO (3-0, 2.13 ERA) vs. REDS’ DAVE BURBA (3-3, 7.29 ERA)

Dodger Stadium, 7 p.m.

Radio--KABC (790 AM), KWKW (1330 AM)

* UPDATE: No one in the Dodger rotation is pitching any better than Astacio. He threw his first shutout since May 24, 1995 in his last outing against the Philadelphia Phillies and has yielded two or fewer runs in four of his five starts. Astacio has yet to allow a home run in 38 innings, the only Dodger starter with such a distinction. Dodger shortstop Greg Gagne is off to the finest start of his career. He entered Monday’s game batting .349. The Reds are struggling for survival in the National League Central under Manager Ray Knight. Their 18 losses in April were the most in franchise history. Their pitchers in April went 7-18 with a 6.36 earned-run average. Burba has struggled this season with a 7.29 ERA. He has struck out 35 batters in 33 1/3 innings, but has walked 21 and yielded 36 hits. Burba has done well against the heart of the Dodger order. First baseman Eric Karros (four for 19), Raul Mondesi (three for 14), Todd Zeile (1 for 13) and Todd Hollandsworth (two for nine) are hitting a combined .154. The only player in the Red lineup hitting higher than .265 is leadoff hitter Deion Sanders with a .368 average. Sanders also leads the major leagues with 20 stolen bases. Second baseman Bret Boone has had considerable trouble hitting off Astacio, going one for 15 (.067).
