Crane Bucket Drops, Kills Worker on Job
A 22-year-old construction worker died Thursday after the bucket of a crane broke free and fell on top of him, police said.
Luis Enrique Perez of Colton was working on the 9500 block of Chapman Avenue in an excavated area about 20 feet below the street’s surface. Another worker was operating a crane above, police said.
About 3 p.m., the bucket broke free and toppled into the trench where Perez was working. He died later at UCI Medical Center in Orange, police said.
State safety officials are investigating the cause of the equipment’s failure. Police said the incident appears to be accidental.
