The Padres suffered yet another injury when Wally Joyner fouled a ball off his right knee in the first inning against Florida on Sunday in San Diego.
Joyner was sent to a San Diego hospital for precautionary X-rays and the preliminary diagnosis was a bruise. He will miss at least today’s game against Atlanta and could be out longer. He was on the disabled list earlier this season.
After being hit by the ball, Joyner crawled several feet in obvious pain several feet to the infield grass, leaving skid marks on the dirt with his spikes. He finished the at-bat, striking out, and left in the top of the third inning.
San Diego, which has suffered with injuries all season, had Rickey Henderson, activated from the disabled list on Saturday, back in the lineup, but his first start since May 8 ended early when he left in the top of the eighth inning with a cramp in his right calf.

St. Louis sent first baseman Dmitri Young to triple-A Louisville on a rehabilitation assignment. He has been on the disabled list since May 11 because of a strained left calf muscle.

Colorado placed closer Bruce Ruffin on the 15-day disabled list retroactive and recalled Curtis Leskanic from triple-A Colorado Springs.

Montreal third baseman Shane Andrews will be examined later this week by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., to further evaluate his left shoulder injury. Andrews’ rehab assignment at triple-A Ottawa was cut short May 19 after he experienced discomfort in his shoulder. Andrews was placed on the disabled list May 1.
