SANTA ANA — An 18-month-old boy was killed Monday night after a car struck a concrete light standard and it fell on him.
The accident happened at 8:13 p.m. in the 1100 block of West Stevens Avenue, as a teenage girl was walking with her 3-year-old sister and 18-month-old brother in a carriage. A driver lost control of his car and crashed into the light standard, which fell on the carriage, Fire Battalion Chief John Chambers said.
The driver fled on foot into an apartment complex, and police were looking for him late Monday night.
Paramedics placed the child on life support, but he died of head injuries a short time later at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Chambers said. The 3-year-old suffered a sprained ankle and cuts.
The driver was described as a Latino male in his 30s, with long black hair, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.
