Group to Present Welfare Challenge
A group that presents itself as an alternative to the Christian Coalition is holding a conference today to “challenge the religious community of Orange County to do its part with regards to welfare reform.”
The conference, which is open to the public, will be held by the O.C. Call to Renewal from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph Center, at 480 S. Batavia St., in Orange.
Participants will discuss how welfare reform proposals will affect Orange County’s poor, elderly and disabled, said Sister Marie Gaillac, who is helping to organize the event.
O.C. Call to Renewal was formed last fall in response to a challenge by Jim Wallis, a Washington evangelist in the social gospel tradition and editor of Sojourners magazine.
Wallis founded a national organization of the same name to bring together Christians concerned about the poor.
