A Long Walk in Park for Bruins

UCLA’s Jake Meyer walked four in a row in the 12th inning Saturday, forcing in Mike Lopez-Coa’s go-ahead run and setting up a 7-3 Miami victory in the second-longest game in College World Series history.

The only game longer than Saturday’s 4-hour 42-minute marathon was a 5-hour game between Arizona State and Oklahoma State in 1981.

Meyer pitched only one inning as the Bruins went through six pitchers in the game. Matt Klein replaced Meyer, but he gave up a two-run double to Bobby Hill and Pat Burrell’s sacrifice fly scored German Alvarez.

A two-run home run by Troy Glaus in the bottom of the ninth inning sent the game into extra innings. It was his 33rd of the year and set a new Pacific 10 Conference record, eclipsing Mark McGwire’s mark of 32 set in 1984.

Miami took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth after Jason Michaels’ two-run home run. The 350-foot shot just inside the right of the left-field foul post was his fifth on the year and scored Hill, who had singled.

The Hurricanes (50-16), who lost to Louisiana State in the ninth inning of the championship game last year, advanced to face the winner of a late game between Alabama and Mississippi State. UCLA (45-20-1) will face the loser of the second game in an elimination contest on Monday.

J.D. Arteaga made his sixth career start for Miami in the CWS, facing the minimum of 21 batters over five innings. It tied him with Greg Swindell of Texas and Kendall Carter of Arizona State as the pitchers with the most starts in the CWS.

But Robbie Morrison (11-4) got the victory for the Hurricanes after taking over in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Meyer (3-3) took the loss for UCLA after taking over in the 11th.

Jim Parque had started, giving up three earned runs before being replaced by Tom Jacquez in the sixth inning and Rob Henkel in the eighth. Klein and Nick St. George both took the mound in the 12th.
