Getting a Wave of Approval

About 30 Redondo Beach students took a ride Wednesday on the Ocean Racer, the West Coast’s largest speedboat, as a reward for their involvement in the Student Partnership Council, a joint venture between the district, students and the Police Department to make schools safer.

Over the last four years, student representatives from all 12 schools in the district have met monthly with the department and district to discuss safety concerns and programs that they would like to see on their campuses. As a result, a tutoring program has been implemented and the district has been able to gauge whether students feel safe on their campuses.

“Today’s boat ride was a way of rewarding them for working with us,” said Officer Raymond Griffin, referring to their hourlong boat trip near King Harbor Marina. “The program helps everyone feel safer about going to school.”
