Interim Schools Chief Is Chosen by District Board

Susan Long, deputy superintendent of human resources at Irvine Unified School District, has been appointed as the district’s interim superintendent until a permanent successor is found for Dennis Smith.
School trustees chose Long for the top post at a board meeting Tuesday. The appointment came nearly three weeks after Smith announced his resignation to become superintendent of the Orange County, Fla., school system, which includes Orlando.
When Long takes over Smith’s duties July 1, she will become the first woman to fill the post since it was created 25 years ago. Long, who has served the district for 10 years, holds a doctorate in education from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
“The board believed Susan’s experience with the district, and the confidence and respect the teachers and administrators have in her, will allow her to serve as an outstanding interim superintendent,” Trustee Hank Adler said.
Meanwhile, the board has hired a consulting company to find candidates to fill the position permanently.
