Marcelino R. Barreto of Oxnard, a lifelong resident of Ventura County and retired Ventura Sanitation District employee, died Thursday in a Ventura hospital. He was 60.

The third of nine children, Barreto was born Jan. 16, 1937, in Oxnard. He attended school there, graduating from Oxnard High School.

His younger brother, Raul Barreto of Oxnard, recalled Marcelino running track in high school. “They used to tell me that my brother was a fast runner,” he said.

“The older we got, the closer we got,” Raul said. “Me, him and my other brother, we were always looking out for each other.”

Marcelino Barreto went to work for the sanitation district in 1962, at the age of 25, and retired in 1992. When he wasn’t spending time with family, he was outdoors, said his brother, usually with a rod and reel in his hands.

“Fishing was his main deal,” Raul said.

In addition to his brother, Barreto is survived by his wife, May; daughters Diana Claudio of Ventura and Catherine Villareal of Santa Paula; sons Daniel of Santa Paula and Robert of Ventura; stepchildren Debbie, Bobby, Richard and Ronnie Marin, all of Oxnard; brothers Anthony and Joe, both of Oxnard.
