A 32-year-old man suffered a minor gunshot wound to his thumb after struggling with two armed men who broke into his apartment Thursday and demanded money, police said.

The robbery occurred in the 300 block of Clay Street about 4 p.m. Police said two men, each carrying a handgun, broke into a unit where Gregory Hale and Clint Phipps, 22, live.

After taking two pagers and a wallet, the robbers went to a back bedroom and found Hale, who refused to give them the rings he was wearing, Lt. Gary Brooks said.

“He grabbed the suspect’s gun and the firearm discharged,” Brooks said. Hale suffered a superficial wound on his right thumb, he said.

The men fled in a purple Honda two-door that was idling outside with a third person behind the wheel, police said. The car was last seen eastbound on Clay Street, Brooks said. No other injuries were reported and police have no suspects.
