A 14-month-old Oxnard girl who was accidentally shot in the forehead with a pellet gun by a young relative was listed in critical condition Friday at a Santa Barbara children’s hospital.

The girl, whose name was withheld, was shot Thursday by her 12-year-old uncle as the boy was raising the pump-action pellet gun to shoot at birds, said Sgt. Lee Wilcox.

The rifle fired accidentally and the girl was hit in the forehead, with the pellet penetrating her skull.

The girl was rushed to St. John’s Regional Medical Center for surgery and then taken to the intensive care unit for children at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

The boy’s parents told police they did not know the pellet gun was in the house. Apparently the boy had borrowed it from a friend, Wilcox said.
