Small Home Wins Big Design Award

From a Times Staff Writer

A small beach cottage made a big splash in the Gold Nugget design competition at the 1997 Western Building Show, which ended Saturday at the Moscone Convention Center.

The two-story 1,000-square-foot home--built in a factory and taken by trailer to its lot in Newport Beach--is the first manufactured house ever to win a Grand Award for design in the 34-year history of the Gold Nuggets, the oldest and biggest competition of its kind in the United States.

The house, built by Silvercrest Homes and Lido Resort Homes, was judged the best small single-family home. Among its features are dual master suites with an office loft, Corian counters, large deck, an arbor, picket fence, Dutch door and dormer windows.

The homes are priced from $78,500 to $83,900. A total of 214 are planned for the 9.8-acre site when it is built out in 2003.

The Gold Nuggets honor distinctive architecture and land planning in residential, commercial and industrial projects in 14 Western states and Pacific Rim countries.

The design competition is the highlight of the annual building show, one of the largest industry gatherings in the country, which this year attracted an estimated 15,000 builders, designers and suppliers.
