Council Backs Cyber Center for City Hall

Thousand Oaks may be on its way to becoming a smart community.

The City Council has accepted recommendations to move ahead with the “Smart Community Project”--a plan to put the city on the cyber-map with an online site and develop a 2,000-square-foot telecommunications center in City Hall.

The center will include several computers on which residents and area businesses can look up everything from market information to daily specials at local restaurants.

Project proponents have likened the online hub to railway stops in the 19th century, saying it would be crucial to the city’s future economic and civic health.

“Areas that opted not to have a railroad pass through became ghost towns,” said Mayor Judy Lazar.

Tuesday’s decision, however, also stipulated that the state pay most of the project’s $1.3-million cost. The city has already put more than $114,000 into the project’s start-up and is wary of the costs ballooning as development continues.
