Stars Miffed, Not Upset, On First Day of Open
There weren’t any upsets in the Ocean Pacific U.S. Open Friday at the Huntington Beach Pier, but some players were miffed about the draw for the double-elimination tournament.
“Someone screwed up,” said Nancy Reno of brackets that can pit top teams against each other sooner than usual. “I know they use a points system, but it’s not a well thought-out policy. We would have been better off seeded third, fourth or fifth.”
Instead, second-seeded Reno and her teammate Karolyn Kirby, will play 15th-seeded and highly regarded Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs today.
Other teams advancing included top-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak, and third-seeded and defending champion Barbra Fontana and Linda Hanley.
