Gore Shoots 64 to Beat Newport’s Jurgensen
Amateur Jason Gore of Valencia, who was six shots behind leader Steve Jurgensen of Newport Beach after three rounds of the California State Open, shot a bogey-free eight-under-par 64 Friday to win by three shots at Indian Wells Country Club and Resort.
Gore, 23, who put off turning pro because he is hoping to be selected to the Walker Cup team, made four birdies and had trimmed the deficit to two shots behind Jurgensen by the turn. At the par-4, 13th hole, Jurgensen missed the green with his approach shot and when he failed to get up and down, his lead had disappeared.
Gore kept the pressure on as he two-putted No. 14 for a birdie to take the lead. Gore clinched the title when Jurgensen knocked his second shot in the water on par 5, 18th, while Gore made birdie.
Gore finished with a four-round total of 268. Jurgensen was second at 271; his consolation prize was the first-place check of $10,400. Joon Lee of Fullerton finished third with 272 and received $6,000.
