Child Care Program Gets Reprieve After Protests

A YMCA child care program slated to close was granted a temporary reprieve after parents protested that they didn’t have time to find alternatives for their children.

The Eagle Rock after-school program, which officials had planned to close in the fall, will run from Labor Day to Oct. 31.

The program was scheduled to be shut down because of a lack of funds and the need for a new site.

The child care center will still close in November unless residents can help find resources to keep it open, officials said.

“If funding and leadership and location all became available in the future, that’s all we need to go forward,” said Alan Hostrup, senior vice president for the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA.

Highland Park and Eagle Rock parents who depend on the center for affordable child care expressed relief, but said they worry that the future of the program is still in question.

“Living with the uncertainty when it has to do with your kids is hard,” said Richard Bentley.
