San Diego Padre outfielder Tony Gwynn, the seven-time NL batting champion, had arthroscopic surgery to remove kidney stones Sunday.

Team trainer Larry Duensing said the stones were removed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in suburban Chicago. After missing two games, Gwynn wanted to return to San Diego with the team Sunday night but was to remain hospitalized overnight as a precaution. Gwynn’s wife, Alicia, was with her husband.

“He lobbied to go on the plane home,” Duensing said. “We feel it’s better for him to stay here and rest.”

Gwynn, who is batting .383, will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis, and Duensing said he could play today against Montreal.
