A 19-year-old Oxnard man who was shot five times during an argument with a group of gang members was in good condition Monday, according to the Oxnard Police Department.

The man, who police declined to identify, was sitting with three friends near the Channel Islands bridge overpass at Peninsula Road at 10:20 p.m., police said.

“They were just sitting there, talking, drinking beer and watching the boats go by,” said Det. Terry Burr, of the Police Department’s gang investigation unit. He said the assailants were gang members.

According to Burr, a group of about 10 men walked up to the victim and his friends, started an argument and used gang slogans. Then one of the group shot the victim five times. Neither the victim nor his friends are gang members, Burr said.

After the shooting, the gang members fled, Burr said. One of the victim’s friends drove the man to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where his wounds were treated.

The man was shot three times in the chest and twice in the side, but Burr called the injuries “minor,” and said he was extremely lucky.

The victim was expected to be released from the hospital Monday, Burr said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
