Bartlett Edward Doe; Portrait Painter

Bartlett Edward Doe, 79, commercial artist and portrait painter whose subjects included Gen. George S. Patton. Doe, a native of Big Rapids, Mich., grew up in Glendale and attended Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. After an apprenticeship with the Russ Harte Studios, he went to work for Walt Disney Studios, working on the production of “Fantasia.” He painted Patton while serving in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. Working for Frederick Kopp Advertising Art, he created movie industry paintings and posters featuring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Peppard and Clint Eastwood. In the 1960s he associated with The Art Group, which became Huerta Design Associates, painting portraits of business executives, children’s book illustrations, cartoons, automotive and aircraft illustrations and advertising art. Doe was commissioned by the Air Force to paint portraits of such aviation pioneers as Jacqueline Cochran, which now hang in the Air Force Academy and military museums across the country. In his later years, Doe devoted himself to portraiture, painting such celebrities as Tom Selleck and Jerry Lewis. On Aug. 6 in Los Angeles.
