FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--With a nearby forest fire and a heat wave throughout the week, anglers, rather than fish were limited. Those who did fish found early-morning and evening bite good. Chris Burrows, 13, Valencia, 6-pound 8-ounce largemouth bass on lower lake. Ed San Filippo, San Gabriel, 12-12 striper, on plastics on upper lake. Tim Frisnch, Newhall, with guide Pat Buckley, six largemouth bass, largest 8-5, at 25 feet, on mudsuckers and crawdads. Micha Torgerson, Castaic, 9-pound catfish, on mudsuckers on upper lake.

18. LAKE PIRU--Closed since Aug 6. because of a brush fire on the west side of lake. Roads to lake reopened Wednesday.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish starting to pick up at Yellow Bar. Bluegill and 1 1/2-pound crappie bites along channel, and stripers on anchovies. Jasper Tucker, Compton, 10 bluegill and a four-pound striper on mealworms at Spanish Point.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Many bass biting on topwater early in the morning on crankbaits. Ralph Scott, Claremont, 19 1/2-pound catfish, on squid at fishing pier. Daniel Myers, Hawthorne, 17-pound catfish, on mackerel, at east end of lake. Joe Buechler, 4-15 rainbow trout on Needlefish at mouth of Cachuma Bay. Ryan Lee, Brent and Eric Taylor, ages 8-10, 32 fish-count total, including bluegill, on meal worms near island.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Bass great in early morning, on crankbait. Largest, 7-5 by Dallas Rhodes, Ojai. Marlin Spencer, Santa Barbara, limits on Friday and Sunday. Catfish biggest catch all week. Jenni Silvestri, Ojai, seven catfish, largest 20 pounds, on mackerel at Station Canyon. Trout active near dam at 35-50 feet, biting for trollers using Needlefish lures or Apex lures.

22. CORONA LAKE--Night fishing picking up with limits. Catfish best bet, with three caught exceeding eight pounds, on mackerel. Largest by Joe Hernandez, Riverside, 12-3 near shore by dam. Mike Bradshaw, Riverside, 9-8, at east shore. Herb McCave, Buena Park, 8-6, near trees.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--As at Corona, catfish biting on mackerel. Smaller bass also biting, with 14 caught three to eight pounds.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Catfish biting again after slow catch previous week. John Willard, Anaheim, five-fish limit weighing 28 pounds, including a 15 1/2-pound blue, at Santiago Flats. Robert Bull, Long Beach, 21-pound limit of channel catfish, on mackerel in the flats.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Early-morning and late evenings continue to be the best time to catch catfish. Boats doing best in deep hole during mid-afternoon, on mackerel and marshmallows. Greg Hunt, 12, Lawndale, 11 1/2-pound cat, on mackerel in creek inlet. High morning temperatures pushing weed beds to surface, increasing topwater bite for bass. Night crawlers hot in afternoon. Many two- to four-pound bass reported.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Large number of two- to five-pound catfish. Stripers vary in size, ranging from three to 13 pounds. Hossain Ali, Long Beach, 13-4 striper, on anchovies, at inlet.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Few bass coming in, some bluegill, on mealworms, red worms and mini-jigs. Morning or evening best. Rocks and trees best places to look.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Many five- to eight-pound bass at Barrett and Hodges reservoirs. Anthony Wituky, San Diego, 8-1, at Pine Creek at Lake Barrett. Largest bass just under nine pounds at Lake Hodges, on topwater bait. Cats also biting at Narrows (Hodges), on mackerel and crawdads. At Lower Otay, Clint Hicks, San Diego, two catfish totaling 17 pounds, largest 10-5, on mackerel. San Vicente produced two catfish, 15 pounds or more, on liver and mackerel. Jerry Rhode and Dave Pedrazzi, El Cajon, 10 catfish weighing 81 pounds, near island.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Fishing remains slow because of the heat. Best times for trout, early morning and late evenings, on Power Bait and night crawlers. Warm-water fish: bass, bluegill and crappie biting throughout day, on trout teasers and mealworms. Overall bites remain fair.

30. BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout bite fair, but no large fish caught. Fish still biting on trolled lures near south side of lake, on Power Bait at 15-30 feet.

31. BISHOP--Nice stringers, on night crawlers and Thomas Bouyants at Bishop Creek and South Lake. Power Bait and Kastmasters working well at North Lake. Hefty trout reported at Lake Sabrina with calm wind conditions. At Owens River, perch biting in evenings, on yellow and purple crappie jigs, Kastmasters and Thomas Bouyants. Lots of limits at Big Pine Creek. Good fishing, on grasshoppers, crickets and Power Bait. With recent rains, water high at Taboose Creek, Tinnemaha Creek, keeping anglers away.

32. MAMMOTH LAKES--The trophy trout season still in effect at Crowley Lake with regulations. Barbless hooks, artificial lures and flies. With that in mind, spin fishing good by trolling on surface or with lead core using Rapalas. At Lower Rock Creek, Rapalas bringing home fish in the 5-pound range. At Upper Rock Creek, Power Bait worms and Thomas Bouyants best, while Kastmasters and Super-Dupers working well at Rock Creek Lake.

33. JUNE LAKE--Fishing broke open, with 15-20 rainbows caught over three to 4 1/2 pounds. Fish coming out at the beach end of lake, on rainbow or green Power Bait. Trolling good at 45 feet on Rapalas and silver Needlefish. Action better in afternoon than morning.

34. BRIDGEPORT--East Walker River, fishing good, but difficult to wade and land bigger fish because of high flow. Dry-fly activity best in early mornings and evenings. Must use line eight pounds or more. Bridgeport Lake slowed, some rainbows on night crawlers and Power Bait. Robinson Creek Channel and East Walker Channel doing well for trollers, on night crawlers with a two- to three-pound trout average. Little and Big Virginia lakes seeing DFG and Alpers rainbows up to five pounds, on olive buggers for fly fisherman. West Walker River has picked up, with two- to five-pound rainbows on night crawlers.
