Chargers Cut Coleman

The San Diego Chargers released wide receiver Andre Coleman, also the team’s all-time leading kickoff returner.

Coleman, 5 foot 9 and 165 pounds, was drafted by the Chargers in the third round of the 1994 draft out of Kansas State. He had 36 receptions for 486 yards and two touchdowns in 1996.

Veteran offensive tackle Robert Jenkins retired and 16 other players were waived as the Oakland Raiders reduced their roster. Jenkins, an 11-year veteran, was cut by the Raiders in February then re-signed in May.

Meanwhile, the Raiders waived running back Ricky Ervins, who had signed with the team in late July.

The league announced owners have approved Paul Allen’s purchase of the Seattle Seahawks.

The vote was at least 23-0, new Seahawk President Bob Whitsitt said after being notified by the NFL in New York.

“The only hurdle left on the table was the NFL,” Whitsitt said.

Buffalo Bill quarterback Alex Van Pelt had his first practice in pads, two weeks ahead of schedule after he separated his throwing shoulder, and hopes to play in Friday’s final exhibition game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Indianapolis guard Tarik Glenn, selected 19th overall in the April draft, sustained a minor ankle injury in practice, leaving his status in doubt for the Colts’ exhibition finale against Detroit on Thursday. . . . The Kansas City Chiefs released 10 players, including veteran running back J.J. Smith and quarterback Steve Matthews, reducing their roster to 60. . . . Linebacker Peter Boulware, Baltimore’s top draft pick, practiced with the Ravens for the first time after ending a five-week holdout. Boulware will play Friday night against Buffalo. . . . Running back Randy Jordan became the last of the Jacksonville’s original players to get cut when the Jaguars trimmed their roster to 60.
